It couldn't be too deep, because it would impede with the closet doors. It couldn't be too high, or else it wouldn't function well as a bedside surface. And it had to be the exact width to fit between the bed and the wall. After keeping my eye on Craigslist for about six months, I finally found this little treasure, and it only cost $40. <br />

I bought this bedside cabinet on Craigslist for $30. It was described as an 'antique' and the previous owner told me he paid top dollar for it an antique store. I think 'antique' is a bit of a stretch, it's definitely not a top quality piece of furniture, but I knew it had great potential and it was exactly the size and style I was looking for.</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Our new kingsized bed was crying out for a headboard, and as always, I like to find creative solutions while being as resourceful and thrifty as possible. I've always been inspired to create a headboard from an old vintage door. I found a door at a local salvage yard that was the exact measurements to frame up my king sized bed. It had a million coats of paint, all flaking off, and it was coated in junk yard grot. But it was solid wood, the exact right size, and even the colour that I wanted. Cost $25. I took it home and sanded off the loose flaking paint, then distressed it a bit more by sanding the edges to expose some of old layers of paint. I then bought a french cleat bracket to affix the door onto the wall behind the bed. I used a stud finder to locate the studs, and drilled the brackets to the wall at the selected height. The coordinating cleat was then affixed to the door itself about 1" down from the top. The door was then hung onto the wall and positioned laterally to frame the bed in the exact position. Cost of bracket $30. Total cost of headboard: $55<br />

<br />
Since we had just upgraded from a queen sized bed, I decided to use the fabric from the old threadbare queen sized sheets as the material for the bedskirt. First I flattened the queen sized fitted sheet by removing the elastic from the corners and taking the corner seams apart. This was the base for the new king sized bedskirt. I needed to fill in the squares on the corners with some scrap fabric, but since this part lies underneath the mattress, the patches would not be seen. Next I measured the height of the bed frame and box spring together, this is the height of the finished skirting. I cut strips from the queen sized flat sheet, sewed them end to end to create enough length to wrap around the bed, then starched and pressed the material. These strips were then sewn onto the base around the sides and front, but not the back. Another pressing, and the project was complete. Total cost: $0.<br />

The first re-decorating task was to remove the carpet (yes, CARPET) that was affixed to the inside walls of the cabin. Next task was to paint the inside walls a nice crisp white colour.<br />

<br />
After painting, the next task was to recover the v-berth cabin mattress. I re-used the existing foam and recovered with new fabric.<br />

The sail cover was probably original to the boat from the 1970s, and was badly weathered from years of use. Several patches were made over the years, and although it's probably time to completely replace it, I decided on another round of patches instead. I found the same colour marine fabric (at a gazillion dollars/meter), but only needed 1/2 meter.<br />

These eight (8) solid oak dining chairs were custom made fourty years ago by a local artisan and family friend. They have been in my family ever since, and I've just given them a new lease on life with a fresh coat of pain and new upholstery. The initial thought was to restore them exposing the original wood and integrate them back into the new decor of the family home, but the decision was made to use new chairs instead and get these vintage beauties ready for a new home.</div>

This is a unique upcycled combination of vintage cutlery from yesteryear presented on a vintage wooden 8" x 10" frame. Each piece is unique, with original markings on the cutlery handles, such as "Cafe Waldorf" and "Woolworths". Knife, fork and spoon are affixed to a hardboard backing painted a dark charcoal, and wooden frame is painted cottage white and slightly distressed. A great DIY project using heirloom or antique store treasures. <br />

I made a number of these framed antique silverware sets with the intention of selling them. I've listed each set for $30 each. Using the cuffs of men's button down shirts, I created a little pouch great for overnight jewelry, coin purse, feminine products or any other purse contents.<br />

<br />
I was inspired by an online post where a blogger created throw pillows from these authentic bags used to transport the raw coffee beans, including batch and origin markings, and some actually had a few beans left inside. The coffee sacks were first ironed, then cut 2" larger than the size of the pillow insert. Sew a simple seam around three sides, then install the zipper. I then ironed the seams flat.<br />

<b>Burlap coffee bag Christmas tree skirt</b><br />
<br />
I think these burlap coffee sacks make such a great conversation piece, and once I got my creative juices flowing, the projects and uses seem endless. My next project was to create a Christmas tree skirt with the burlap coffee bags. I estimated the size of the finished product in terms of diameter (45"), then cut a piece of Christmas wrapping paper to this size (45"diameter). I cut a hole for the tree in the middle. I then used this as a template or pattern to cut the burlap. There are two options, you can either use one single coffee sack and cut it into a 45" large circle with a hole in the middle OR you can cut panels from several different coffee sack and sew them together. I chose the second method because I wanted to showcase as many of the interesting logos and markings as possible. Sew together the panels and press the seams, then fold over and sew the raw edges around the outside of the piece. <br />

<b>Burlap coffee sack place mats</b><br />
Using the unprinted sides and ends of the burlap coffee sacks, I cut out rectangle pieces 20" x 14" making sure to cut square to the grain/weave NOT on the diagonal. I then used some neutral fabric as a backing liner (raw edges folded under, liner finished size: 18" x 12"), affixing it to the back of the burlap by sewing machine. Once the backing was affixed, I then carefully frayed the edges by pulling out the woven material on the outside edges. This leaves a 1" fray on all four edges.<br />

First, measure the pillow insert. Cut the front and back panel of the shirt about an 1" larger to allow for seam allowance. Place right sides together and sew together with 1/2" seam allowance. Instead of trying to align the patterns front and back, I turned the back fabric panel so the patterns ran opposite. <br />

Think again. The first step is to find a white pumpkin. <br />
Next, place newspaper or other protection about 5 feet around your working area. I recommend working in your garage or somewhere you can make a mess.<br />
Take a package of crayons and peel off the paper wrapper.<br />
Arrange the crayons in order of the colour spectrum. Red/Purple/Blue/Green/Yellow/Orange/Red<br />
Hot glue the crayons on the top of the pumpkin in the order of the colour spectrum.<br />
Melting crayons:<br />
- I used a hairdryer on high heat but low fan, and found that this sprayed the wax around and I had to be careful to pull away when the drips formed.<br />
- I also used a creme brule torch and a barbeque lighter at times through the melting process.<br />
- I think the best thing to use is an heat embossing gun<br />

This firewood carrier project was featured on one of her TV segments, and inspired me to make my own. <br />

As always, I decided to modify it slightly, to use dowels for handles instead of cord with grommet holes. I found this image on the Internet, and again, modified it slightly to allow a larger opening for the hand.<br />

I chose a thick canvas fabric, and only needed 1/2 metre in total. I selected a 1" dowel at my home improvement store, 2 lengths of 20". I cut the fabric as follows, turned and sewed the raw edges on the long side and the hand opening. I folded the strap sides over the dowels and sewed them.</div>

The kitchen posed the biggest challenge. Although it is a relatively large (12'x12') space, it is awkwardly shaped, and it also functions as a hallway to the master bedroom. I knew it had potential to be an eat-in kitchen, but it won't work to have a stand-alone table and chairs. I decided to make a custom table by cutting a triangle notch from a round solid wood table top. <br />
<br />
To test if my idea would work, I first cut a peice of cardboard to the proposed size and shape and tested it in the space. It's going to be perfect!<br />

Then, with the help of my handy-man partner Rich, we marked then cut the table top with a skill saw. I bought a single table leg from IKEA for $7.50. The table leg was attached, and then the table top was bracketed to the wall for stability. Two matching chairs were purchased on Craigslist for $10each.<br />

In my living room, I have a long wall above my 9ft sectional sofa. The artwork I had by default on this wall was the wrong scale, and I was tired of looking at it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxsoMT9-OBFLHqfkd_CVXq_0utLLgpqiS_dUUjEjs33JZtMHF_GGMMeLGFEuTBD-GYmbEyVB-HX9ZX12j4muZUw3UEFy-U6Fjl5_O7X4dYKMbopkg754qZFkzQzkt8vm3erEPNy3d9Xxs/s1600/livingroom+wall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxsoMT9-OBFLHqfkd_CVXq_0utLLgpqiS_dUUjEjs33JZtMHF_GGMMeLGFEuTBD-GYmbEyVB-HX9ZX12j4muZUw3UEFy-U6Fjl5_O7X4dYKMbopkg754qZFkzQzkt8vm3erEPNy3d9Xxs/s320/livingroom+wall.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
First step was to find a bunch of old picture frames for CHEAP. I went to a great old salvage yard/antique store and found 12 solid wood frames. I carefully selected the frames by placing them on the floor of the shop, arranging to make sure the collection would be balanced.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHNVj5tHuJNwQs4ExwPCRoL5S4mkFbgwyaw4nDs9WrmqIIHcC55P3RmXTdi662mOhVSDlCV_qNc2NeU44IciXb8r_SLXqZnXiMkeWX8ASk6q-jQEHwZkfibYPuKkrG-YMK_Ca7sqVlBCs/s1600/antique+store.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHNVj5tHuJNwQs4ExwPCRoL5S4mkFbgwyaw4nDs9WrmqIIHcC55P3RmXTdi662mOhVSDlCV_qNc2NeU44IciXb8r_SLXqZnXiMkeWX8ASk6q-jQEHwZkfibYPuKkrG-YMK_Ca7sqVlBCs/s320/antique+store.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Most of the frames needed re-gluing of the joints and re-squaring, and all needed a good sanding and cleaning. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
In order to install them on the wall in perfect symmetry, I first arranged the frames on some craft paper and traced the frames. Numbering the frames and the craft paper outlines helps match up the frames along the way. I then measured the distance in mm from the top of each frame to the spot on the hanger bracket for the nail head, and marked this spot on the craft paper. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpf-kQyooZBE4tsvKanExIX54Y9N8N0zpezeUlo2hGeNoDI7TPdZymND7FqTBsga376G92DruayFDUp1RvAEGyQnXVRHl7U2Jn_G0Lm6EY-VLjK6A8nD5x3QkLuc5_ZK3kuBPhWKk2o7c/s1600/IMG_1439.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpf-kQyooZBE4tsvKanExIX54Y9N8N0zpezeUlo2hGeNoDI7TPdZymND7FqTBsga376G92DruayFDUp1RvAEGyQnXVRHl7U2Jn_G0Lm6EY-VLjK6A8nD5x3QkLuc5_ZK3kuBPhWKk2o7c/s320/IMG_1439.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The craft paper was then hung on the wall perfectly centred on the sofa wall and perfectly level. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwvKBVehTM2oD5GiGBDxDTN7qyQ5Xhbb5A20Teh0arZ4xWxOSlqJx7HitWd9ac4vmCTohUnIpMCxy0N8uLZGHsUc4rEqKdgUc573_z_FnCSYQBfmAskkUS0N288XJX6ZSu9KyBrc6qIus/s1600/IMG_1441.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwvKBVehTM2oD5GiGBDxDTN7qyQ5Xhbb5A20Teh0arZ4xWxOSlqJx7HitWd9ac4vmCTohUnIpMCxy0N8uLZGHsUc4rEqKdgUc573_z_FnCSYQBfmAskkUS0N288XJX6ZSu9KyBrc6qIus/s320/IMG_1441.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I nailed through the paper at each marked spot, then removed the craft paper from the wall. <br />
I then hung each frame. I used a small amount of double sided tape on the bottom corner of any frame that was refusing to sit level.<br />

<br />
<strong>Message board</strong><br />
Attach the corks with a hot glue gun to the inside backing of any picture frame to create a functional message board. Before affixing with hot glue, first dry fit the corks in the chosen pattern. I like alternating two corks vertical, then two corks horizontal and so on.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N-g3OIgY5uI/TwX57dMsNMI/AAAAAAAAAJA/i7WuYLEl8_A/s1600/IMG_7259.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N-g3OIgY5uI/TwX57dMsNMI/AAAAAAAAAJA/i7WuYLEl8_A/s320/IMG_7259.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-91JoSvMYN9U/TwX6UXg_vRI/AAAAAAAAAJI/ZGODloXArqw/s1600/IMG_7261.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-91JoSvMYN9U/TwX6UXg_vRI/AAAAAAAAAJI/ZGODloXArqw/s320/IMG_7261.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<strong>Trivet (hot pad)</strong><br />
<b>Option 1</b>: Choose any size flat backed photo frame, and hot glue the corks to the inside backing. Up to 8" x 8" works well.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PIz8AFkvLKU/TwEV9JVg1bI/AAAAAAAAAA0/qapB32oDkCY/s1600/p217b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" rea="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PIz8AFkvLKU/TwEV9JVg1bI/AAAAAAAAAA0/qapB32oDkCY/s200/p217b.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Option 2:</b> Glue wine corks together in a 'standing' formation. I selected all red wine corks because I like the look of the stained red end. 89 corks were used in this project. First, open a bottle of wine and pour yourself a glass. Next, collect your inventory of old wine corks together on the table. </div>

The corks cut easily with a paring knife or utility knife. Make sure to cut the 'bad' end, leaving all the red sides in tact. </span></td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Voila!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<strong>Wreath</strong><br />
Start with a styrofoam or straw wreath form, and hot glue the corks.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Where to collect wine corks</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Home</b> - Save your own corks from bottles that you drink at your own home.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Wineries</b> - When you visit a winery, ask them if they save their used corks. Most of them will be happy to give you them for free.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Wine Festivals</b> - Ask each wine station to save their corks and collect them from the stations at the end of the function.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Restaurants</b> - most throw them away, but if you ask, they will probably save them for you. </div>heatherfulcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02424613360757084690noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1076560101423143787.post-89204521787220444212012-01-01T15:36:00.001-08:002012-01-02T15:09:08.306-08:00T-shirt quilts<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Many years ago I was at Kits Beach in Vancouver and saw someone with a beach blanket made from old t-shirts. What a great idea! My own dresser drawers were bursting at the seams with old t-shirts that I just couldn't seem to part with, and now I know what I'm going to do with them. I even started collecting t-shirts from my travels with the purpose of adding them to my quilt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 1:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cut the shirts into 14' squares. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Options: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Sometimes the decal or emblem is on the sleeve or lapel, in which case, I cut the emblem and patch it onto a 14" square blank shirt section cut from the front or back of that same shirt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- If you have child sized t-shirts, you won't be able to cut a 14" square because they are too small. In that case, cut out the emblem and sew it onto a blank t-shirt square</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- If your printed emblem is longer than 14" just cut the peice to 14" wide x custom length, then find another t-shirt with a small emblem and pair them together for a combined length of 28". This will ensure your grid is balanced out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- If your t-shirt has something memorable printed on both the front and back, cut out and use both.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- Sometimes the thing you want to incorporate onto the t-shirt quilt isn't actually a t-shirt. It can be a pair of memorable jeans or a university jacket. In that case I'll cut the peices of the item and sew together a 'collage' of the bits onto a 14" square of t-shirt fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- If you don't have enough t-shirt squares to make the size quilt you want, consider adding photo transfers of members of the family or favourite travel photos. Print the photos onto t-shirt iron-on transfers (available at office supply stores), then iron onto 14" blank t-shirt squares. Another idea is to have the children in your life create their own t-shirt square with fabric paint. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 2:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Blanket size</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Based on how many square you have, you can determine the size of your blanket.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Options:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1-2 squares - toss cushion - with one t-shirt square and a selected back fabric (or t-shirt squares on both sides) you can create a cover for a toss cushion. IKEA has the best prices for cushion forms - check out the size options before you cut your t-shirts up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
16 squares - 4 square x 4 square will make a nice sized couch throw. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
24 squares - 6 squares x 4 squares will make a small beach blanket or cover a single bed</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
30 squares - 6 squares x 5 squares will make a medium sized beach blanket or cover a double bed</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
36 squares - 6 squares x 6 squares will make a large beach blanket or cover a queen bed</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 3:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Backing</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The blanket needs a backing. You can either use a solid fabric backing, or if you have enought t-shirt squares you can double side your blanket with t-shirt squares on both sides.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 4:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Blanket style</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Beach blanket: I love the idea of using the t-shirt quilt as beach blankets, which means I didn't need any batting for warmth between the layers. Also very easy to launder.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bed cover: By adding a layer of batting between the layers it's easy to turn the blanket into a warm quilt that can be used as a bed cover or couch throw.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step 5:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Start sewing</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sew columns of t-shirt squares.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Press the seams flat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sew the columns together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Press seams flat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once you have the 'front' of the t-shirt quilt sewn together into one large sheet, then it's time to connect the front to the back. With right sides facing, sew three of the four outer edges together, then turn inside out and press edges. This is when the carefull pinning and time consuming part starts. Taking one row at a time, carefully pin the front to back along the seams of the t-shirt squares. Once pinned, connect the front to back by sewing along the seams. Once you get to the open edge bottom, press a folded edge on both the front and back, pin and sew together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I just love these t-shirt quilts. I have created one for myself, as well as for family and friends. If you'd like me to create a quilt from your memorable t-shirts, I have been known to hire out my services as well. The cost is roughly $10/square + any materials required (ie. solid fabric backing, batting for quilted blanket).</div>

You can buy shaped molds at Lee Valley Tools to make these ice lanterns, or you can use an old tin, yogurt container or even juice glass. Just make sure to choose something that does NOT flare in at the top.<br />
<br />
<b>Step 1:</b><br />
Fill your vessel part way up with water, then place it level inside the freezer. <br />
Option: add items into the water relating to the theme of your event. At Christmas you can add cranberries, or evergreen sprigs<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJHBNVmadlQ1s_rclgKHVLAiFFgmEIFyCnElIenmVV9YwTVCPUVN8yx1oVvzxxOgdlFMSW4lYqKME09aLCssyBhlogBzS12yaRBIlqM16gmWN8FSmWtMSfKWsv76D9MZpUoaFXhSPFVnM/s1600/IMG_7262.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJHBNVmadlQ1s_rclgKHVLAiFFgmEIFyCnElIenmVV9YwTVCPUVN8yx1oVvzxxOgdlFMSW4lYqKME09aLCssyBhlogBzS12yaRBIlqM16gmWN8FSmWtMSfKWsv76D9MZpUoaFXhSPFVnM/s320/IMG_7262.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Step 2:</b><br />
Once the first level is frozen, set a smaller vessel inside and weight it down with pie weights or rocks. Add water to the top of the container, and place level inside the freezer.<br />

<b>Step 3:</b><br />
Remove from the freezer and set-out at room temperature for a short time. The lantern will slide out of the mould once it thaws slightly. Place a tea light or battery candle inside the lantern cavity, and enjoy! I placed several of these ice lanterns along the walkway up to the house for my Christmas party. You can also use the an ice lantern on a table centerpiece (with plate or platter underneath).<br />

It had cigarette burns on the top, a very ugly and dated wood finish, and ugly hardware. However, it is solid wood construction, and I could see the potential.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">First I sanded the top to take off the finish, and applied a new coat of stain. <br />
Then I painted the base and drawer with some off-white semi-gloss paint that I had on hand. <br />
I added a new modern handle for $4, and a basket for storage for $6, and voila!</td></tr>

I set about to collect antique coat hooks for the next year or so, picking them up whenever I saw an interesting one at a flea market, antique shop or salvage yard. I then found an antique picture frame at an old salvage yard (for free!), then painted it white. I bought a piece of hardboard at the home improvement store ($2), cut it to fit inside the frame, and painted it the wall colour. I arranged the hooks onto the hardboard, then used epoxy to glue them into place on the framed hardboard. <br />
